DEOMI opened in 1971 as the Defense Race Relations Institute in response to the civil rights movement of the 1960's. The institute has grown and expanded over the years and now offers Equal Opportunity/Equal Employment Opportunity education and training for military active duty and reservists as well as civilians in both resident and non-resident courses.
